Facebook

While some channels are gaining in popularity, Facebook continues to be the King of Social Channels year after year. Every so often you’ll hear that “nobody uses Facebook” or, “Facebook is only for older internet users” … Yet the numbers behind the platform’s popularity tell a far different story. For the time being, it is where the vast majority of ad spending is taking place.

Marketers Using for Advertising

When it comes to image sizes on Facebook, there seem to be an ever-growing list of types of images, and specifications that marketers are coming across. For the everyday account, uploading an image of any size will typically be just fine, but when it comes to running a business account, or having a following on a personal page, the sizing is tremendously important to keep in mind. Whether you’re putting together an ad campaign, creating an event, or simply uploading an image or sharing a link with an image, you’ll want to keep in mind several recommendations:

Facebook Profile Picture
  • Minimum: 761 x 761 pixels
  • Maximum: 2048 x 2048 pixels
Facebook Cover Photo (Business Page)
  • Minimum: 820 x 312 pixels
  • Maximum: 1958 x 745 pixels
Facebook Cover Photo (Personal Profile)
  • Minimum: 851 x 315 pixels
  • Maximum: 2037 x 754 pixels
Facebook Cover Photo (Groups)
  • Minimum: 820 x 461 pixels
  • Maximum: 1640 x 922 pixels
Facebook Event Header Image
  • Minimum: 500 x 524 pixels
  • Maximum: 1000 x 524 pixels
Facebook Uploaded Photo Dimensions
  • Minimum: 492 x 761 pixels
  • Maximum: 2048 x 2048 pixels
Facebook Link Posts (and Ad Images)
  • Recommended: 1200 x 628 pixels
Facebook Stories
  • Recommended (and maximum): 1080 x 1920 pixels

Twitter

Even if you do not have a twitter account (which you most likely should), you absolutely should be monitoring any conversations taking place on the platform about your business. With a 280 character microphone, this is a common area for users to share their opinions about brands, whether positive, or negative. You certainly don’t want to miss out on an opportunity to know where you’re excelling, but just as importantly, it’s just as valuable for you to respond when there are concerns.

While you have a full 280 characters to deliver your message now (how did we ever do it with 140? Remember those days?), incorporating more images, and videos/Gifs into your daily activity will help to keep things new and exciting, and will help you to stand out in the flood of tweets your followers are seeing each day.

    • Audio codec recommendation: AAC LC (low complexity)
    • Video codec recommendation: H.264, baseline, main, or high profile with a 4:2.0 color space
    • Video aspect ratio: 1:1 is recommended as it will always render as a square on desktop and mobile, timeline and profile.

    • Captions: Closed captioning or text overlays are mandatory.

    Instagram

While the majority of Instagram users stick to a square image format, other images sizes still look good and will be just fine. We stick to the squares just to ensure our posts are picture perfect – but it can be time consuming to resize images multiple times when publishing to both Facebook and Instagram. Canva does a great job of making this an easy process.

The travel world can use Pinterest in a variety of ways… Creating boards to go along with your blog articles, boards to show all of the greatest things to do in a particular city or country, or even through ads to remind people of when the best time to start planning certain types of travel will be, or letting them know about groups that you are putting together. This is one of the greatest areas for our industry because it is heavily focused on imagery… It’s your way to show clients (and potential clients!) the world of travel through your eyes.

    Bonus Tips
    • It is strongly recommended to put your logo on each Pin you make, but to ensure you are doing so in a subtle way. Avoid the lower-right corner, because this is the area that will be covered by Pinterest product icons.
    • If your goal is to promote your brand to clients in multiple countries, you’ll want to ensure you are creating Pins for each country you target so that they can be translated into the local language.
    • Pinterest videos auto-play in a user’s feed with the sound off, so do not rely on audio or dialogue. Instead, use text overlays or captions to help tell your story.

    YouTube

YouTube has become one of the best areas for individuals to find a new brand or product, so even though there is no shortage of travel influencers, companies, and amateur travel reporters on the platform, there is more than enough opportunity for you to find new clients or followers. How is that possible? Well, YouTube is available in 80 languages, and covers 95% of the internet population… Most amazingly of all, YouTube is responsible for 37% of all mobile internet traffic! (Yep, that’s probably where all your data has been going.)

Consistency becomes increasingly more important as you develop a following, both in the format of your video and your upload schedule so that you remain at the top of mind for your followers. Are you a content creator who wants to give your followers a more in-depth view of your trips and adventures? How about an expert on cruises that knows all about the different ships, lines, and options available? Then share your experiences, expertise, and adventures! And don’t forget to remind viewers to give your video alike, and turn on the notification bell to be informed of when you upload so they can be one of the first to view your upcoming videos.
